Joe Sakic card #191 1996-97 Fleer Art Ross Trophy #20

  • Finish off the trio of 96-97 Fleer Sakic cards that I own with this insert from the Art Ross Trophy set, which was 25 cards in size.
  • As you might imagine, the set contains all the big name scorers of the time, including Lemieux, Gretzky, Hull, Jagr, Yzerman and of course Sakic. Joe's card is listed at $3 in Beckett.
  • I would have preferred to have seen the photo that's on the back on the front.  The back features a photo of the Art Ross Trophy with Joe directly above it.  Much nicer than Joe breaking through a puck, which really doesn't look that good to me.

Joe Sakic card #190 1996-97 Fleer #137

  • Talk about a mid 90's who's who on the front of this card!  Joe was 3rd in the league in scoring in 95-96 with 120 points, 41 behind Lemieux.
  • It's unbelievable that Jagr is still playing 20 years after this card was made.  I'm pretty sure that he'll sign another one year deal with the Panthers for 17-18.  Probably without the mullet...
  • Love the 4 square league leader cards.  Bring them back please.

Joe Sakic card #189 1996-97 Fleer #25

  • If I had to complain about the card, it would be the team logo in the white circle.  Somewhat unnecessary in my opinion.  I do like the player's name in the gold plate though.
  • No career totals on the back.  You don't see a whole lot of cards that don't list the player's career stats.  This card has just the previous 4 years.
  • Joe's 189th career goal was the first of a 2 goal performance against the Penguins, 10/10/93.  It would be a 4 point night for Burnaby Joe as the Nords would be the Penguins 7-4.  Ken Wregget was the victim that evening...

Joe Sakic card #187 1996-97 Fleer NHL Picks Fabulous Fifty #41

  • Fleer did a nice job with this insert set.  They highlighted 50 of the game's stars, and Joe's bio on the back mentions his 51 goal season in 95-96
  • The black border was also a nice touch, as it complements the base set's white border.
  • Just 13 cards away from 200 for Joe.  I was hoping to hit that milestone this month, but just too many tired evenings kept me from making a push for that mark.  Will hit it for sure in April, along with Jim Thome who is only 14 cards from 200.

Joe Sakic card #186 1996-97 Fleer NHL Picks #2

  • Had a bit of a struggle finding the card # on the back.  Turns out it was in the upper right hand corner, in red on a dark gray border.  I'll be glad to get rid of this cataract next month and be able to see better...
  • Interesting that this set was skip-numbered, using only even numbers.  This means that Sakic's card was the first of this set.
  • The back of the card projected Joe's scoring totals to be 43-76-119.  His actual total in 96-97 was 22-52-74.  Joe also missed 15 games during the 96-97 season.  His playoff totals were more normal, putting up 25 points in 17 games.
