Mats Sundin card #3 1990-91 Upper Deck #365

  • For me, this is the Cadillac of Mats Sundin rookie cards.  It's one of the few cards from the 90-91 UD set that I actually have the card # memorized.
  • The photo reminds me of just how big hockey was for Quebec City; having the provincial flag next to the team flag tells me how deeply rooted the team was.  Until the $$ started getting out of control.
  • Market Watch:  This might be the card that ends up with the most copies on COMC in the market watch portion of my blog posts.  There are 189 copies right now on the site, ranging from 64 cents to $2.25.  I'm sure that there's probably thousands more out there somewhere.
  • Goal #3 came on 10/18/90 vs. the Flyers in the Spectrum.  It wasn't enough for the Nords as they lost 5-4.  Ken Wregget was the goalie for the Flyers that night.

Felix Potvin card #6 1990-91 Upper Deck #458

  • Totally ignored:  the last post for Felix the Cat was on July the 1st.  Need to do a better job of keeping him in the rotation.
  • This photo is from the 90-91 World Junior championships, the only time that Felix was part of the Canadian Junior team.  Held in the province of Saskatchewan, the Canadian team won gold for the 5th time.  The other goalie on the squad was Trevor Kidd.
  • The power of the goaltender collecting community:  This card is listed for $2, which is a buck more than Scott Niedermayer.  Imagine if Potvin had won a Stanley Cup and became a Hall of Famer...

Joe Sakic card #7 1990-91 Upper Deck #490

  • Joe's 3rd card from the inaugural 1990-91 Upper Deck hockey set, it commemorates his appearance at the 1991 All Star Game in Chicago.
  • Why does Joe look so comfortable?  This is already his 2nd All Star Game in just his 3rd season in the NHL.
  • I've never been a big fan of All Star uniforms, but these didn't look half bad.

Joe Sakic card #6 1990-91 Upper Deck #301

  • Card #301 from the set is the first of the "art cards".  Each card represents a team checklist.  They were numbered in reverse order of finish from the previous season.  Quebec finished dead last in the league, giving them the 1st overall pick.  They took Mats Sundin.
  • I noticed while writing this that there is no company name on Joe's stick.   Wonder if this was done on purpose.  Same for his gloves...

Joe Sakic card #5 1990-91 Upper Deck #164

  • This post is the first of 3 consecutive Upper Deck cards featuring Sakic in the 90-91 set.
  • First card of Sakic that features him wearing the captain 'C'.  If you look close enough, you'll see his 'A' underneath.
  • Sakic's 5th game sees him score his 5th goal of the 88-89 season against the Buffalo Sabres.
  • That same night saw Sakic's former teammate Tony McKegney score a hat trick for St. Louis in an 8-8 tie with Detroit.
